PROJECTS / LANSERHOF LANS

Health-promoting Architecture with Alpine Views

Following the successful launch of the Lanserhof Tegernsee in the spring of 2014—one of Europe's most modern health resorts—the expansion of the Lanserhof health resort in Lans, Austria, was completed in 2016. Christoph Ingenhoven designed the upgrade, where the LANS Med Concept originated, finishing the project within seven months. The modernization involved refurbishing the existing building and adding a new modern oval structure to the south of the main tract, originally built in the 1970s. Christoph Ingenhoven oversaw the entire design process for the new buildings and the refurbishment, including interior design. The extension building officially opened in 2017.

The Lanserhof Lans spans approximately 10,000 square meters. "A key objective of this project has been the seamless integration of the architecture into the Alpine landscape and the carefully engineered relationship with the surrounding nature, considering aspects of building physics," says Christoph Ingenhoven. The resort's building complex comprises three sections: the main house and several additions and extensions.

One of the existing guest houses was replaced with a new building featuring 16 rooms and suites, designed by Christoph ingenhoven. Additionally, modifications were made to the existing building at the entrance level, which includes the reception, a restaurant, a shop, a lounge with a fireplace, and a library, as well as in the treatment area on the second basement floor. The first floor of the new building offers guests a spa area with saunas, showers, expanded medical rooms, and both indoor and outdoor saltwater pools. The two upper floors contain seven rooms and one suite each.

The building facade is made of red cedar wood. Balconies extend from the facade, and along with lateral vertical screens, create a dynamic building envelope. The playful design, featuring varying balcony depths and lateral wooden fins, captures the essence of wind, sun, and views while ensuring privacy. The building's oval shape offers optimal wind protection. A fully planted roof garden seamlessly integrates the surrounding Alpine meadows with the roof of the new building. Additionally, seven private terraces are connected to the suites via steps.

Natural materials without synthetic finishes and harmonious, simple rooms form the foundation of this health-promoting architecture, which is dedicated to the holistic recovery of guests. Like the design for the Lanserhof Tegernsee, renowned for its building biology credentials, this project exclusively uses carefully selected materials such as insulation, paints, and varnishes that meet ecological and health standards. The architecture, characterized by elegant shapes and subtle colors, is understated and timeless. Calm, earthy bronze and grey tones, along with numerous wooden surfaces, enhance the effectiveness of the medical and therapeutic treatments.

The goal was to create a particularly sustainable and healthy building complex where guests can recuperate and re-energize in harmony with nature.
