PROJECTS / GATE TO VENICE

Remagining Venice´s Entrance: Where Bridge Meets Lagoon

There are two ways to reach Venice: either from the lagoon or via the Ponte della Libertà bridge. Travelers who choose to arrive by car or train, rather than by ship, traverse the relatively long Ponte della Libertà, gaining a first glimpse of the city's uniqueness. The competition site is situated at the end of this bridge, on the grounds of a former railway depot.

This project allows Venice to address two challenges simultaneously: it reconfigures the traffic flow from Piazzale Roma to the island of Isola del Tronchetto while also revitalizing the entire surrounding district.

The project’s conceptual and formal unity is achieved through a continuous roofscape, whose smooth, wavelike design echoes the tranquility of the lagoon. This roofscape is more than just a covering for various functions below (such as a car park, hotel, offices, a multifunctional stage, shops, etc.); it also serves as a vast green urban park.
