Competition Luisenblock Ost, Berlin - Honoured Proposal
The architecture offers insights into the essence of democracy, mirroring political activities and serving as a city's showcase, visually linking the interior and exterior.
The building serves as a mediating structure between the strict boundaries of Berlin's Federal Ribbon Ensemble and the historical axis defined by the listed Kesselhaus and the Workshop Building. The intentional deviation, a geometric interruption, creates a natural conclusion.
In its spatial design, the structure bridges the gap between the varied block composition and the overarching Federal Ribbon. Transparency turns the building into a cohesive and inclusive part of the city, accessible to all residents and visitors.
The design is envisioned in the south as a mediating large form between the emerging axes of the roofline of the Federal Ribbon and the historical city axis defined by the Kesselhaus and Workshop Building. This large form, as a deliberate break, marks a geometrically natural end to the Federal Ribbon. The front edge of the roof ring aligns with the roof edge of the MELH. While there are material similarities with the concrete of the MELH, it is reinterpreted in a new form.
In its geometry, the design bridges the gap between the heterogeneous block structure and the large form of the Federal Ribbon. The transparency makes the building an integral part of the city, opening it up to the citizens.
