Self-supporting Membrane in a Custom-engineered Loop
The surfaces of the amoeba-like form create a continuous, seamless area, resembling a Möbius strip. Films can be projected across the entire loop, enhancing the atmospheric unity of the spatial continuum. The underlying self-supporting and self-stiffening steel structure creates a spatial configuration that merges interior and exterior. The satin-finished and transparent glass panels were suspended in the cable-net construction in such a way that the exhibits and vehicles could be viewed from all sides without disrupting the continuity of light and film projections. In Tokyo, the structure was shaped into a nearly circular cocoon, where the R8 was showcased as the highlight of the exhibition
Christoph Ingenhoven designed an organic form, which realized using new techniques. The loop is curved in both the floor plan and elevation, creating the desired enveloping effect. The curvatures result in a free-standing structure. The differently sized bulges provide space for lounges, offices, meeting rooms, and catering areas.
